Wild footage shows people huddled in flooded Chinese train carriages

China has been hit by massive flooding, with footage showing cars being swept away and people trapped in railway carriages. At least 12 people have died after torrential rains flooded the subway in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou. A military division has been sent to the site to assist and carry out rescues, authorities said. There are fears a dam could collapse in the city of Luoyang.

Rainfall has reportedly caused a 20m breach in the Yihetan dam, with authorities warning it “could collapse at any time”. Evacuations have been ordered, with a barrier at the Guojiazui reservoir at a “major risk” of failure. Shocking images of passengers struggling against neck-high water inside a train carriage emerged on social media.

The city “has experienced a series of rare and heavy rainstorms, causing water to accumulate in Zhengzhou metro”, city officials said in a Weibo post, adding 12 people died, and five were injured. The city of Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province, was hit by 20cm of rain in just an hour.

Videos posted online showed entire neighborhoods covered in waist-deep water and vehicles floating in mud. Authorities say 100,000 people have been moved to safer places. “I have lived in Zhengzhou all my life and have never seen such a heavy rainstorm as today,” Wang Guirong, a 56-year-old restaurant manager, said.
