Shoppers in Western Australia have been left in shock and awe after Coles unveiled a rare style of self-serve checkout. The conveyor belt self-serve checkout has been rolled out at some of the supermarket giant’s flagship stores. However, it has garnered social media attention in the west, with one online commentator dubbing the machine “beautiful”.
‘This will make the self serve checkouts a better experience, not having to ram/cram groceries into tight spots”, a commenter said on social media. Another said: “It’s just beautiful”. Coles’s self-serve check-outs have been implemented in most of its stores, and the conveyor belt additions can be found in the retailer’s flagship stores, such as its massive Southland shop in Melbourne.
The retailer said the machine is part of its strategy to have multiple payment methods at the checkout but noted it is still adamant in keeping workers at the checkout in mostoles is making it easier for customers to choose how they check out,” a Coles spokesman said.
“While we will always have team members available to help customers on our main lane check-outs, for those who prefer self-checkout, we are modifying the machines to make them more convenient to use.”

The significant change follows a shift in consumer shopping habits, with most Australians choosing to frequent the supermarket more often. Rival Woolworths is focusing its efforts to overhaul its digital product offering and recently announced the construction of fulfillment centers, similar to Amazon, to capitalize on the growing move to online shopping.
