Users of popular social media site Reddit descended into panic on Thursday as the website shut down for about 90 minutes. Twitter erupted in outrage in response, with users across the globe expressing their fury over the inconvenience. The website shut down initially at about 12.30 pm AEST and was restored by 2 pm. The dilemma began with users tweeting Reddit to ask if the site was down, with their fears confirmed a short time later by tech news site Gadgets 360.
Hundreds, if not thousands, of users were devastated at the outage and didn’t express their disappointment. “How on Earth am I supposed to argue with people on the r/sto subreddit if the servers are down??? Reddit, I demand answers,” one person tweeted. One jokester blamed the outage on the Victorian premier.
“I can’t believe Reddit is down during lockdown. How could Dan Andrews do this to us?” they wrote. “I cussed out my Wi-Fi router realized Reddit was down. Starting to feel bad about it,” someone else said. Reddit has been down for an hour. Please check on your nerdy friends, all of you,” a fourth wrote. Peace was eventually restored when the site was back up and running, with users celebrating the news with happy GIFs and emojis. “Life update: Reddit is back. Thank you, internet Gods,” one satisfied user wrote. While the cause of the outage hasn’t been revealed, some jokingly speculated it to be the result of hackers or the cryptocurrency Dogecoin.
