Comedian’s swipe at Scott Morrison goes viral

2 Mins read

Australian comedian Celeste Barber has a way of cutting through the spin. Her most recent video is a perfect example of that – one that perfectly explains Australia’s current vaccination nightmare to a vast international audience. “A lot of people are asking why Australia’s back in lockdown,” she says in the video. “We did it well at the beginning – we did the hard part easy, and we’re doing the easy part hard. “But now, because it’s all about vaccines, our Government didn’t order us enough vaccines.

“We’re freaking out, we’re like, ‘Well, the lockdown worked before, let’s keep locking them down until they’re vaccinated. “And now we get yelled at by said Government.” She took a shot at Prime Minister Scott Morrison for his handling of the vaccine rollout.

“Remember when Australia was on fire a couple of years ago, and that guy that was the leader f***ed off to Hawaii? Same guy. The same guy that didn’t order enough vaccines but is blaming us for not getting vaccinated, and therefore that’s why we’ve gotta lockdown.” Many pointed out that Barber’s videos can reach a vast audience overseas, where much of her fanbase is located.

“Don’t underestimate the impact or influence of this. Celeste Barber reaches a whole bunch of people not usually interested in politics but very interested in this,” wrote Guardian political reporter Amy Remeikis.

The New York Times’ Australian bureau chief Damien Cave shared similar thoughts. Straight to the point explainer. Anger with a smile about a Government that didn’t order enough vaccines and is now yelling at millions of Australians to behave and stay at home due to that mistake by the #sameguy (i.e., the Prime Minister) who was in Hawaii during the bushfires.”

Barber, who shared a photograph after being fully vaccinated against Covid-19 on August 12, has spoken at length about the vaccination issue in Australia.

In a previous video, she addressed vaccine hesitancy by joking about the 5G conspiracy. “I wanted just quickly to jump on here and speak mainly to anti-vaxxers,” she said. “I want you to know that when I got my first Pfizer shot about a week ago, the nurse who gave it to me … actually showed you the 5G before she puts it in the vial, which I think is good.

“Also, I was amazed. It blew my mind at how small Bill Gates’ DNA fits in the vial with the 5G. “The nurse who has been a nurse for 20 years or something says how grateful she is that she can get all her information from people who sell hats at the market, and they know so much about it.”
